Just six miles east of Manchester City centre, Ashon-under-Lyne is a busy market town with a clear sense of its own identity. Ashton is famous for its historic markets - a large Victorian market hall, an open-air market of 140 stalls open seven days a week, and a monthly farmers market. Also in the town is The Arcades shopping centre and the refurbished Ladysmith Centre. More specialst shops can be found on Stamford Street while an out-of-town retail park provides a base for familiar names such as Currys, Comet, B&Q, IKEA and Sainsburys.
Entertainment
Ashton has over 30 bars, pubs and clubs, as well as a wide range of restaurants and cafes. For mainstream entertainment the focus is Ashton Moss Leisure Centre which features a 14-screen Cineworld, 10-pin bowling and choice of popular eateries. For live performances, the music venue Whitchwood Live provides a stage for original and tribute bands, while the Tameside Hippodrome regularly hosts touring theatre shows.

Ashton is well-served by local amenities: a public libary, doctors, dentists, and the Tameside General Hospital. The town prides itself on its green spaces which include waterside ares along the river and canal.
